"This is simply the best documentary ever made about Broadway... a real achievement which amounts to a thrillingly informative cinematic ride."
- David Noh, Film Journal International
ShowBusiness follows four high-profile productions of the 2003-2004 Broadway season that eventually became Tony Award® nominees: Wicked, the box-office busting musical adaptation of the literary prequel to The Wizard of Oz; Taboo, the controversial Rosie O'Donnell/Boy George collaboration; the highly anticipated Tony Kushner/Jeanine Tesori musical, Caroline, or Change; and Avenue Q, an irreverent puppet musical that became the sleeper hit of the season.
From casting to staging, from previews to red-carpet opening nights, from the nomination announcements to the suspense-filled Tony Awards® night, ShowBusiness provides a never-before-seen look at the inner workings of Broadway musicals. Allowed unprecedented backstage access, director Dori Berinstein casts a camera's eye on rehearsals, backstage dramas, and the mysteriously wondrous creative process.
"It was a sheer labor of love to chronicle a Broadway season and experience first hand the hopes, dreams, and passions of the people who devote their lives to the theater," said director/producer Berinstein. "The Broadway community couldn't have been more supportive and my hope is to give audiences a glimpse of what really goes on behind the curtain."
Jeffrey Lyons of NBC's REEL TALK cheers the release, saying: "'ShowBusiness' gives a rare behind-the-scenes look at the agony and ecstasy of Broadway. Anyone who loves the theater has to see it!" Matt Freeman of TonyAwards.com exclaims "ShowBusiness' is the ultimate look at the behind-the-scenes drama of Broadway at its most exciting."
